On their turn, each player must match either the rank or the suit of the last played card and place a card on the discard pile. Players may keep placing cards in the same turn as long as they maintain a run.
If a player cannot play to the run, they must draw a card from the draw pile.

British Blackjack is governed by several unique rules that add a twist to the game. Certain cards, known as “power cards”, have special effects that change play.
- 2 Card: Playing a 2 forces the next player to draw 2 cards or play another 2. If that next player also plays a 2, the following player must pick up 4 cards unless they too can play a 2.
- Black Jack: Playing a black Jack forces the following player to draw 5 cards. If that following player has a black Jack and plays it, the next player must draw 10 cards.
- Red Jack: A red Jack neutralises the effect of a black Jack. So if a player plays a black Jack, the next player can avoid drawing cards by playing a red Jack.
- 10 Card: Playing a 10 reverses the direction of play. If play was clockwise it becomes counter-clockwise, and vice versa.
- 8 Card: Playing an 8 makes the next player miss their turn.
- Ace: An Ace lets the player change the suit to one of their choice. An Ace cannot neutralise the effect of a 2, any Jack, or an 8.
